PlayNewtEpithet is a free short boss fight released on itch.io on October 26, 2026, made by Cocolito Collective for Aristos Interactive Jam #9. Ione, a shepherd with her uncle's old spear, faces the Marsh Serpent in five rounds on the band of a black-figure vase. Old Thrax the potter paints what he sees, and at the end the vase gives her a name based on how she fought.

How to play

  • Step with A and D or the arrow keys.
  • Space strikes. Strike when her spear shines white; on red, wait, or the Serpent bites back.
  • Shift dodges back. Step back as the jaws come, not before.
  • Every attack has its own tell, sound and answer: watch the Serpent's head.
  • When the Serpent bows its head, strike it, or hold Down to lower your spear and spare it.

The names

The vase remembers how you fought, not whether you won. Dodge clean and she is swift; strike early and she is bold; take hits and keep going and she is scarred; fall and get up and she is unbowed; spare the Serpent and she is merciful. Five rounds take about three minutes, so replaying for a different name is quick.
